Hiking & Trekking
The most popular activity at Nyore Hillside Retreat is hiking and trekking. We are located 5,000-6,000ft above sea level. Guests can take on an easy or challenging hike across the luscious and endless rolling hills. Walking support sticks, binoculars and a walking guide are available on request.
If you prefer a more casual local walk around the village, one of our walking guides can accompany you, or feel free to download our village map and venture out yourself.
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s savannah national parks and underlain by ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks which date back more than 500 million years. It is home to 350 bird species as well as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck. At your request, a game drive can be organised, please call and make an enquiry.
Camping
We make camping as enjoyable and easy as it ought to be. Whether you’re an experienced camper, or just fancy a spot of lazy camping, we provide tents, beddings and on call staff in a safe outside space to give you all the best the outdoors can offer.
Open gardens and picnic area
Enjoy quality time and plenty of open space for the family. Our open gardens and picnic area is perfect for days of outdoor exploration and comes with swings, hammocks, and family games to keep everyone safe and entertained.
Just Clay Workshops
Ever wanted to make your own clay pot? Now you can. Take a tour in our brick burning area to see how clay pots and bricks are made, and give our local pot making sessions ago.
Nyore Coffee Experience
Nyore Hillside Retreat proudly roasts and serves our own homegrown coffee. Guests are welcome to visit our local coffee plantation, to see how it’s grown and the process of coffee, from the garden to the table.
Farmer’s market (Mon, Tues, Fri)
Visit the local farmers’ market and shop farm-fresh produce from over 70 local farmers and producers in the region. The farmers in the market are always happy to meet and greet new faces and talk about their seasonal stock and other stories.
Organic gardening
From pest management to pruning, our local gardeners offer workshops and handy hacks to help you take care of your garden the organic way. Our most popular sessions include how to look after your flowers from seeds and cuttings, and backyard composting, where we demonstrate how to start your own compost from scratch and renew old using commonly found organic household material.
River Rwizi heritage walk
Come along on our guided walks to discover River Rwizi, a small local river that cuts through the low lands. Learn how this river has transformed over the years and what current challenges it now faces.
BBQ time
We value organic and homegrown produce and this includes our meats too! Let us rustle you up some homemade sausages and locally reared beef (Ankolie long-horned cow) on our sizzling BBQ. We also cater to our vegetarian and vegan friends with a mixture of non-meat alternatives including vegetarian burgers, skewed seasoned vegetables, and fruit platters, and lovely desserts to crown the day.
Bird watching
A wide range of species can be seen within a just few minutes of sitting at Nyore balcony, our frequent flying visitors include the popular Green Broadbill, Grauer’s, Grauer’s Swamp and Neumann’s Warblers, Shelley’s and Dusky Crimsonwings, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Strange Weaver, Rwenzori Double-collared, Regal, Purple-breasted and Blue-throated Sunbirds, Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Stripe-breasted Tit and several others.
